You get it to happen at DCA where we can fly into it and you will have 5000 attendees. Put me down. Would be glad to pay the attendance fee just to land and take off from there.
When I lived in the DC area (1968-73) I would routinely fly into DCA. That obviously was before the SFRA and, initially even before they had TCAs (Terminal Control Areas) which were the precursors of Class B. I think the TCA came into existence in 1970.
In those days I took people on sightseeing flights over the District and as long as I avoided P56 over the White House all was fine. In fact my second date with the woman I eventually married was on just such a flight - in a Beech Sierra no less. Amazing she still married me and we’re still together 47 years later.
Chicago is always a blast and being a local I would be happy to help there or in SW FL if either was to happen. Problem is not many good airports in Chicago that are close to the action. Would be quite a haul from KDPA to downtown where the wives would want to be. Plenty of good convention centers nearby though!
Whatever the location is, it needs to be wife friendly. DC is wicked cool but my wife would be bored. places like Las Vegas, NYC, Quebec City or Miami are perfect as “spouse-friendly” locations.
I am a fairly new member( just renewed for the second year) and have not had an opportunity to experience THE Migration. Having a spouse friendly locale is a big selling point for the Mrs.
Places with aviation museums would be cool. I understand people not wanting to go back to Oshkosh a month after Airventure. On the other hand, if you’ve never been there, the EAA museum is incredible, and not best seen during the last week of July.
Dayton, OH with the AF museum at Wright Patterson might be neat. Dayton probably not high on the spouse list though.
DC seems like it fits a lot of categories—things for the spouses, cool museum, somewhat decent weather in September (versus, say, Lakeland). And the draw of KDCA.
Probably even more important for the 2017 Migration to be spouse-friendly because I imagine Duluth doesn’t have much happening. Maybe try to alternate locations: “spouse” one year, “pilot” the next.
We had a Migration in Dayton with dinner at the Museum. It was fantastic.
We also had one in Mobile with field trips to the Naval Air Museum (as a former Navy guy I thought it was better than the AF museum[6]) as well as a personal tour of the Blue Angel’s facility hosted by a Blue Angel.
Generally we have tried to alternate between Duluth and places with more spouse appeal.
