COPA Migration 2020, thoughts

Perhaps if you go to Michael’s you could do a bit of decorating on it

Why not create your own mask. Perhaps your airplane; your N-number or anything…

Sorry to chime in here, but a few months ago, COPA sponsored a webinar with Dr. Buchman from Emory university on the virus. If you search “Emory” it pops right up. Anyway, from that webinar…

Not advocating any changes, but there are other opinions.

Edited to correct spelling of Dr. Buchman’s name

I obviously am not communicating well.

At least for me, I am comfortable accepting or not accepting a risk that only impacts me.

Where I get less comfortable is imposing risk on others without their knowledge or consent.

In the case of a highly transmissible disease, if I get infected I could infect others (unintentionally) thus imposing my risk taking on them.

This has been an important factor in the recent outbreak in Texas. Many young people decided they would take the personal risk of getting infected. Some of them got infected and most will not see any severe consequences personally. However, many of them went on to infect (unintentionally) more vulnerable people who are suffering the consequences.

That why I say if an individual decides to “take the risk” the ramifications of that decision extend beyond just themselves.

Economists call it an externality…imposing a cost on a third party that did not choose to incur that cost. In this case the cost could be serious illness or death of the third party.

Even if I was 100% certain I would suffer no serious consequences of exposing myself to the virus, for me, that is not the full picture of the risk I am imposing on society.

You know Gil, you wrote almost this same sentence earlier in the thread and it pissed me off, but I bit my lip because you are such a senior COPAN who’s served us greatly. But please, keep your political views in the hot section , and I won’t mention church choirs and other white conservative super spreaders.

Therein lies the key factor. Every attendee at Migration (or any other optional event) has full knowledge of COVID risk and therefore voluntarily consents to that risk by attending. It’s not like a nurse at a hospital who has to go to work, or people who need to go to the grocery store for food.

Scott, you’re talking legalities and Jack is talking societal responsibilities. If I attend, breathe on Dennis, and he gets sick snd/or dies, you’re telling me that as long as I can get COPA to produce his signed consent, I have a good chance of defending myself. Jack is saying he doesn’t want to put himself in that position.

This thread is just a “who’s going?” and why. There is no right or wrong. I agree with Jack. I hope to see y’all next year.

Pierre, you know I respect you, Jack, and any other COPAn who prefers not to attend for any reason.

All I ask is that we also respect those who make the informed decision to choose to attend.

Pierre:
Your post pissed me off and my post pissed you off, sounds like a wash. You have assumed a political view but the riots, and looting have contributed to the surge in cases, that’s not political slant, its a natural outcome. If you want to add choirs and super spreaders fine, if it has added to the cases then let’s mention them, the fact that cases have gone up is a fact and the fact that deaths are so far flat is also a fact. I appreciate that you are politically sensitive but the subject is the safety of going to Migration and understanding why there is a surge is relevant.
Let’s stick to COPA.

Either you are going, or you are not. I am particularly not interested in “why” you are not going.
Manage the risk to your liking.

This used to be a friendly place. If a friend invited me to a party and I said I’m not going; the friend would “particularly” be interested in why.

P

I disagree, this is a friendly place, in fact, you peaked my interest when you mentioned you were returning your amphib to Maine. My point is that you don’t want to attend migration because of the risk, well, I don’t need to know that. Any risk, I will evaluate for myself(and family), and make a decision based on the facts I have. As of now, I am going. If you make a different choice, then fine, but don’t come to argue otherwise. Between now and then, many things can, and probably will change. As it nears, i(and many others)will re-evaluate and decide at that point.
Why we should or shouldn’t is a personal decision, and at least in my opinion, not up for criticism.

At Fernandina Beach, Runway 4/22 is 5301 feet.

A little more length.

Exactly why I am considering attending, not committing.

Although I have already had the virus, and am not worried about getting it again. An atmosphere of suspicion, masks, and distancing doesn’t sound conducive to meeting new people and forming relationships.

I’m going to wait and see!

Edited to delete post-wine editorial content.

Ray,

Same here. My first grandchild (grandson) will be born a few weeks after the event and I don’t want to end up in a 14 day quarantine (or worse). I’ll miss one event, but not two.

Congratulations Scott.

As you’ll see, grandkids are really fun. All the joy, none of the responsibility.

Just so you can keep life in perspective in making decisions, it’s important to know that the entire county in which our Migration event will be in has had a TOTAL of 115 cases. That’s “cases” not deaths… Now I’m not sure how many airplane accidents there have been during that period of time. Fear and anxiety are terrible feelings that stop many people from living life to the fullest, and that includes the fear of flying.

But to quell the fear if that’s possible, it must be done with education and facts. Amelia Island has some of the lowest case count in the country To that end, here is a link that you can check regularly in making your decision. Just insert the zip code 32034.
