Improved landing light now available

Aerodrome Technical, LLC has developed a landing light Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the SR20 that completely isolates the landing light from both engine vibrations and propeller pulse. It also eliminates the need for placing aluminum tape over the top half of the light bulb. The result is a cheaper landing light that lasts longer with either approximately the same or greater effective light output depending on the light bulb selected by the owner/operator.

The STC authorizes the use of either the original landing light bulb from Cirrus Design, or a common GE 4596 28-volt 250-watt (or equivalent) landing light bulb (used in many other aircraft such as Cessna).

The landing light STC is installable in one afternoon (about three or four hours of labor), weighs lees than 1 lb, is simple to install and fits almost completely inside the engine cowl out of the way of the engine air inlet. The cost of the STC kit is $450.00 US.

The SR20-A retrofit is supposed to take care of the landing light problem along with another 100lbs of useful load and a cowl modification which allowed the engine to run cooler. Before dropping $450.00 plus another $150 in labor to fix a design problem is there any word from CD on the ‘A’ retrofit?

As far I know, there is no firm date or price on the proposed retrofit, or how long the wait will be after placing an order, and what will be involved. Cirrus Design would be the best source of info on that. But at over $100 a pop, and some aircraft going through a bulb every five to ten hours, it won't take too long to save money. There is also the safty issue of not knowing if you will have a landing light when you are on final, or any other time you will need it.

The STC is also completely removable in less than an hour.

Ok, time for a little safety issue.

Landing lite or no lite, set your approach with proper airspeed and proper rate of decend and just keep the wings level looking at the departure end, if you did the planning correct you will make a nice touchdown and surprise yourself that you did it without the landing light. Be careful. Too many people are getting distracted and causing damage when there is no need for it. Did you hear about the twin that came back around because the door open, well he forgot to lower the gear because he was distracted. Proper airspeed with proper rate of decent will make you a perfect landing with or without lights. Cheers, enjoy and have a great Cirrus flying day.

Cheers,
