Garmin 430/530 Tutorial Video/Avionics Question

Any opinions re: the new Garmin 430/530 video? I have the Garmin 295 video and found it helpful. Am a low time private pilot so I am especially interested in hearing from VFR pilots. Also, how are pilots configuring avionics :430s/ EHSI/Arnav/Stormscope/Skywatch for VFR flight? Thanks

We purchased ASA’s “GPS Trainer” on interactive CD which included the simulator and manual for the 430 (the sim and manual are also available for free from the Garmin site). We are very happy with it and feel that when we pick up our plane, we’ll be ready for the 430. We haven’t seen the video, however.

Bruce: I just bought the ASA GPS Trainer, so I can’t comment on it yet. For anyone anywhere near Santa Maria, Avionics West (see www.avionicswest.com) is putting on a two day course on the operation of the Garmin 430. The next one is October 20-21. They are limiting the class size to 18 persons and will have a “live” Garmin 430 for each 3 persons. They have a training course and PowerPoint slides to go along with it. BTW, I’m signed up for October 20-21 and am willing to share expenses for anyone flying up from Southern California.

Avionics West is working on a similar program for the Sandel 3308 EHSI in the near future. Keep tuned!

Following up on the recent thread on IFR Magazine, the October 2001 issue has a 5 page article on flying the Sandel 3308 and a sidebar article on the Icarus Instruments NavAlert II used with the Sandel. There has been almost no attention paid to this unit in Cirrus aircraft. Anybody flying with one?

Also in IFR Magazine October 2001 is a letter to the editor about a card failure on a Garmin 430/Datawriter which caused most of the navagation data to disappear from the 430 even though it was checked o.k. on power up. I also read IFR Refresher and Aviation Consumer from the same publisher, but IFR Magazine is the best of the 3. See the prior posts for information on IFR Magazine.

Stephen, thanks for the reply. I have the asa product as well and find it more helpful than just the Garmin sim (that is , of course incl. in the asa product). What I am referring to here is the Garmin video, which I have not seen reviewed on this site. Apparently I need the extra help of a narrator explaining things to me as in the 295 video. Would you kindly provide phone #/ e mail for IFR - I would like to subscribe? Also is there a tutorial for the Sandel? Thanks for the help.

Bruce: I checked the Garmin web site. There is no Garmin video on the GNS 430. They have videos on the eMAP, eTREK, GPS III Plus and GPSMAP 295 only. There is some similarity between the GPSMAP 295 and the GNS 430, so you will have some advantage there.

So far as I know, there are no training materials on the Sandel. Sandel has a features page on its web site which is helpful. See http://sandel.com/sandel/products/sn Sandel features page.

You should also get the Pilot’s Guide. See [http://www.sandel.com/sandel suppofrt/sn 3308/sn 3308_docs.htm](http://www.sandel.com/sandel suppofrt/sn 3308/sn 3308_docs.htm) Sandel Pilot’s Guide.

The only organiation I know of outside of Sandel working on training for the Sandel is Avionics West. They currently have a two day course on the GNS 430. I am signed up for October 20-21. The course is limited to 18 persons and has a “live” GNS 430 for each 3 persons. It is in Santa Maria at their facility.

BTW, to any Southern California pilots going to Santa Maria that weekend, I will share expenses for the trip for the weekend of October 20-21.

Avionics West is working on a course for the Sandel. They plan to start it in the near future. It will probably be one day, but I am not sure.

There are a number of articles, both on the http://www.avionicswest.com Avionics West and on . These are not, however, “>http://www.avweb.com” TARGET=“new” AVweb. These are not, however, IFR Magazine. Subsciption phone is (800) 786-3453.

I hope you are mistaken since I have just ordered 2 videos for the 430(one for me and one for a friend). The ordering info is on my computer @ the office- I’ll e mail you Monday. Got ordering info direct from garmin site via “contact us” portion of their site. Try that-otherwise I’ll send you an e mail monday. Thanks for the help on the Sandel and IFR mag.

Seems to me the video IS there. Part no. 010-10331-00 for $25.00

The above page is off the 430 page, by clicking on accessories on the left bar.

Bruce: Thanks for the information. I ordered a copy tonight. For $33 and produced by Garmin, you can’t go wrong. I think I should be well prepared for the Avionics West course, between the ASA CD training program and the Garmin video.

You’re welcome. How about giving us a report once you get it. I’ve been thinking about getting the ASA CD too, my delivery is next Apr/May but I want to start learning this soon.
