Has anyone received an SR20 with the two bladed prop? If so, I would like to know the performance figures. After all, the money Ovation2 gained 6 kts. switching to a two blader!

I think Sam Johnson’s plane has a 2-blade prop. Cirrus says the performance differences are insignificant, except a slightly higher exterior noise level with the 2-blade.

The Mooney gains were quoted as being from a complete re-design of the prop. A much more exotic blade shape than the older three bladed prop.

Just the discussion I wanted to raise; 2 vs 3 blades being my hardest choice on how to equip position 170. Over the years I’ve owned 3 77/78 Rockwell 114’s. Ser. no. 243 and 362 with 2 blades and ser.no. 427 with a 3 blade. 243 and 362 were 5 and 4 knots (respectively) faster than 427. Also, with Telex 3500 headsets, (passive) the cockpit noise was easier to take. 2350 rpm on tne two blade, and tne “drone” disappeared whereas the 3-blade had a higher pitched drone that you couldn’t get rid of. Cockpit noise is perhaps a moot point with the ANR headsets we’ll all be using. I’d also like to hear from someone who’s flown both on production SR-20’s. Call me vain ,but if there’s no performance difference, I’ll spend the extra for the looks of the 3 blade. If I have to give up more than 2 or 3 knots , I’ll stick to the two blade.

I spoke to a contact in Cirrus Design, and he tells me that there is no measurable difference in performance (cruise) between the two props. He also said there is a significant reduction in noise with the 3 blader. Although the POH only shows the difference as 0.01 dB, this figure is actually made-up. The noise testing for the two blade prop was done, but for the 3 blade it was only demonstrated to be quieter, and a nominal figure put down for certification.
The actual difference, I am told, is over 3dB, which is well worthwhile.

Everything I’ve heard and read from Cirrus says there is very little difference. In fact, the POH shows virtually no noise difference.
I’m wrestling with the same issues. Here’s how I stack it up:
2 Blade: + save about 15 lbs. (Better
usefull load)
+ Better Weight & Balance
envelope
+ Perhaps marginally faster
3 Blade: + Looks better
+ Perhaps marginally quieter.
