Single engine night flying is a bit riskier than flying during the day, but it’s a small risk and one one I’m willing to take.
But having the CAPS sure would be nice! I fly a lot between Frederick, MD, Pittsburgh, and upstate NY, which means flying over mountainous terrain with no airport within gliding range some of the time. I try to fly as high as I can at night for a longer glide, and my GPSMAP 295 will show me the interstates (for what that’s worth), but I agree there’s no substitute for the CAPS in situations like that. I remember when I flew T-28’s the procedure for an engine failure at night with no airfield available was to bail out. Good idea.
