Operating Costs Redux

Let’s try it this way. Here is what I am hearing on the estimated costs of operating the SR20:

$25/Hour for annual maintenance, inspections and ordinary wear and tear.

$25,000 est cost for the 2,000 hour on the engine and props - $12.50/Hour.

$5-$6 paint and interior holdback based on $17-$20,000 at 3,500 hours.

Plus insurance ($3,000-$5,000/yr), Garimin data cards at $400/yr and hangar expenses.

Let me know if these numbers represent reality.

Don,

Which model did you buy? I want one. It doesn’t use fuel.

I think your $25 an hour for maintenance depends on usage because the annual is a big part of this item. Also, we’ll be under warranty for awhile. If you run 200 hours a year, I doubt maintenance, incl the annual would cost $5,000. If you only flew 50 hours, then I expect the annual (inspection alone) would reach the $1250. In these two examples, maint costs per hour rose with less use. Use this argument with your wife to justify greater use.

I would increase this budget item each year as the plane ages. And, modify based on your usage. And, you’ll still need lots more money than planned.

Insurance: I think $3,500 or so for the SR20 is enough, given a typical person with some experience and no accidents.
