It was a once in a lifetime experience. We were training in the SR22 and waiting for traffic on final before taking off. This old twin Beech was on short final with no wheels showing. We hollered on the CTAF to no avail and sure enough, it was a perfect belly landing with all the sparks and noise you would expect.
The pilot exited the plane and then stood very close and watched as the plane started on fire. Presently the fire trucks arrived with water and foam and the fires were put out with no explosion. The plane was clearly a total loss and covered with foam just like in the movies.
According to the pilot, he has lost one of the engines and was fooling around trying to feather the prop and forgot the gear. He said he was trying to crank the gear at the time of the crash.
It was truly an amazing sight that made us wonder if this was a movie or for real - it was real.
