COPA Migration 2020, thoughts

As I sit hear on this July 4th I’m running into an analogy of reality. What mother wants their child to join the military? Even if not factual, there is the perception that death awaits that child. The fact that only 5% of our military serves on active duty in a war zone but the fear persists and surely death awaits for those sons & daughters who serve.

Of course, today, very very few serve in the military, and so many are essentially locked in their homes.
I just can’t help but wonder if desire to survive (individually or as a country) is being drained out by our fear of not surviving. In so doing, we snuff out our freedom.

Lest anyone misinterpret my comments (Lord knows that never happens!!!), my point here is that medical conditions of all types; viruses included, will always be here and always have something to fear and worry about.

The question is whether we succumb to that fear or deal with it. From where I sit, our country has let fear get in the way of logic, common sense and the ability to deal with adversity. I keep saying if WWII were being fought today; we would lose because we have let fear win out over our ability to deal with this. I have lived and worked with every respiratory virus of the last 50-60 years. Although they are all different; none of them have paralyzed our society like this one.

Damn. After 20 years of fighting with you, it turns out that we are both on the same side of rationality. Who would have guessed?

John, exactly. I want nothing more than to have a Migration, but seeing I would fly in commercially through ORD has me concerned. I am waiting to see how the membership as a whole feels. I am on the fence as well. I will attend if there is a migration due to my BOD obligation.

Key is for me, Is for all of my fellow COPANs stay healthy.

By the way, the world must be coming to an end when two of my friends, Brian and Dennis, agree.

Happy Fourth!

Nothing to fear but fear itself! FDR said it in ‘33 when he got inaugurated and it’s just as true today.

If this is the conversation I can look forward to by attending, I think I’ll go ahead cancel now.

…I just lost a best friend to Covid 19. She had dinner at my house 6 weeks ago, with her husband of 32 yrs. 6 weeks later after fighting for,her life for 4 weeks, she didn’t make,it.

Mask work
Social distancing works

Get outside yourself and consider your risk,to,others in the remote case you’re an asymptomatic carrier…it’s a small price.

Sorry to hear John, that’s terrible.

Precisely.

My most sincere condolences on the loss of your friend.

Perhaps my sentiments where misunderstood, I never suggested flouting the requirement to wear a mask or adhere to social distancing guidelines, but rather that those constraints where not compatible, in my opinion, with an event such as Migration.

I believe I made this clear in my post from Thursday afternoon.

Once again I am terribly sorry for your loss and hope this post clarifies any ambiguity as to where I’m coming from.

Deepest sympathy John. You are the second COPA member I know of that lost someone close. The other lost his father.

We are a pretty small community and yet the loses are seen here. This disease hits closer to home every day.

John - I’m very sorry to hear about your loss.

For those interested in the webinar, four patients with active Sars-Cov-2 infection where able to transmit live virus to a petri dish via coughing and sneezing. Virus particles, expelled with such force, blew out of the mask and around it.

Dr. Buchman added that the ordinary surgical masks will likely prevent virus transmission “to some extent” when just normally breathing. See video beginning at about 24 minutes.

More recent published research bears out that transmission is reduced (i.e. not to zero, but significantly less) by proactive mask use, and probably has to do with intensity and duration of exposure. Ask your doctor for advice in this regard.

Let’s all be careful out there.

Thanks Hans…full disclosure. I posted after reading your first post…I subsequently read the rest of the thread and had every intention of modifying my response…then the phone rang; then the doorbell; then my wife and frankly I forgot until just now returning to the thread.

So, I apologize for overreacting to your post. Read in the context of the rest of the thread, I agree, you aren’t cavalier…and, I do think perhaps you might reconsider your notions relating to migration. We are all going to have to make sacrifices we don’t like, both for our own good and for others…I am searching for that middle ground where I can stay safe yet not put my life on hold…

I have to also confess, I shared some of the independent notions you expressed…reminds me of the 5 psychological factors — the rules don’t apply to me; it won’t happen to me; I take vitamin C and D and am therefore immune - macho man! Then my friend — seriously one of our best friends died. It w as a wake up call of mammoth proportion.

This thing is real!

Hope everyone had a safe, enjoyable 4th…

John-

You where not the first, I edited that post just now to hopefully avoid any further confusion.

No apologies necessary, as I have come to learn, forum interactions have pronounced limitations, and our intent is not always clearly communicated.

Had I suggested what you inferred, you would have been right to call attention to the err in my ways.

Far from it, I am very conservative and methodical when it comes to risk, and am under no illusions as to the seriousness or lethality of this disease.

This is the very challenge we all face.

I respect everyone’s opinion but I think what Brian and Dennis said above is a very reasonable and rational way of viewing this. Some things are beyond our control. Just like flying we need to use good judgement in all of our decision making. I’m looking forward to attending and hope we don’t cancel.

Sorry to hear, John. Glad you were not infected.

Could not agree more.

This isn’t about bravery…it is about protecting others even if you are willing to take the risk personally.
