Planning a trip to New York City for daughter’s college graduation next month [actually it’s the end of EIGHT years of college/graduate school so it will be appropriate for huge celebration as well as making it possible to purchase many new aviation gadgets in the future!].
I would prefer to fly to a GA airport that has good, quick public transport access to “The City”, if such a place exists. I’m too risk averse to drive a car amongst the cabbies, but I can hunker down in the back seat of a taxi if that’s the best access
Any recommendations appreciated. Thanks.

http://www.airnav.com/airport/hpn HPN aka White Plains would probably be your best bet. Driving into NYC isn’t that bad, but then that’s where I learned to drive. (And I learned to fly at HPN.) HPN has scheduled commuter service and I’m sure has a number of ground transpo choices.
Fyi, the New York area controllers are known for being nasty when you make a mistake and sometimes when you don’t. Tread lightly and don’t take it personally if you get flamed.
Have a safe trip.

Gary -
A couple more options.
If you want to be close enough to take a cab into the city, Teterboro (TEB) is probably the closest option. Primarily used for BizJets these days, but I fly my Trinidad in about twice a month. Because of the complexity of the airspace right under EWR’s approaches, an IFR approach is probably best. Per other posts, best to be well briefed on the approaches as things get a little hectic. Particularly watch the MAX altitudes - the Controllers are rightly fanatical about these.
A little further out is Morristown (MMU). Much more relaxed airspace than TEB. But you’ll probably have to rent a car or take a cab ($100+) to the city. Could theoretically take the train (NJ Transit), but its a relatively long trip and somewhat complicated.
Hope that was helpful.

I have flown into HPN (White Plains) several times. The FBO Westair can get a taxi or drive you if they are not busy to the train station which is 10 mins away. The trian into NYC Grand Central will take 35mins for the Express and about 45 for the local. It is all very easy. You can get a subway or a cab at Grand Central. If you have time, go to the oyster bar in Grand Central. Congradulations on you daughters graduation.
