A couple of problems

163CD has had a couple of problems.

First, the ARNAV freezes up when doing an ILS to MYF. It happens every time. If I hit the exit button twice it will reaquire and then lock up again. People at ARNAV thought that the problem might be a loose connection between the Garmin and the ARNAV. They suggested that pin 10 should be inspected for overcrimping. The unit was pulled, inspected and reinstalled. I flew the ILS yesterday . . . same problem, the ARNAV locked up. Has anyone else had this problem? I’m thinking now that there is a software glitch.

The other problem was with the HSI. On an ILS the glide slope indicator stuck in the on glideslope position. There was no flag. If I’m not mistaken, someone else reported a similar problem. As it happend, I had the other VOR receiver tuned to the localizer. I think I’ll continue this practice; intersections can be identified through the GPS. The HSI has been fixed.

So far I have been very pleased with the service I have received from Cirrus, ARNAV and Crownair in dealing with these problems.

I had that problem where the GS indicator stuck at “on-glideslope” with no flag. I noticed it during startup (i.e. the GS was not displaced up one dot like it normally should be, after hitting ENT once on the Garmin).

In my case, I tried an ILS [in VMC of course] and the needle actually worked properly there, just not in the “self-test”.

So mine was sticky but not TOO sticky. I still had it repaired as I wouldn’t have been comfortable in IMC.

Interesting! I’ve occasionally fly into Carlsbad-Palomar and have had the ARNAV ‘freeze up’ and hadn’t given it much thought. I’ve also flown in the MYF and had the same problem. The 430 works fine but it is as if the ARNAV needed to be ‘rebooted’. I tried rebooting in the air and it worked for a minute and then froze up again. Until your post, I hadn’t thought much more about it. I have never had that happen anywhere else in the country. Hmmmm …

Bill: As you and I briefly discussed at SBA fly in, I have had the ARNAV freeze-up also. It has ONLY happened when I have a flight plan TO MYF in San Diego. I didn’t really connect this to MYF before, but I wonder if having MYF as a portion of the flight plan (or final destination) is the issue (ie: software). It sure is starting to look like it. I didn’t know Walt had the same experience, and only with MYF. Too much to be a coincidence. I was told the same thing as you when I called ARNAV, but I don’t believe a crimped connector can cause loss of signal then ALWAYS regain the signal when you exit the display menu mode.
I have not had further problems since I have not flown into MYF recently.

Bill, I have been flying my SR-22 into Palomar and MYF practicing ILS intrument approches. I have not seen the asame problem but I will keep my eyes open. Because I have been practicing the approach under the hood I am paying moree attention to the Sandel and VOR.>163CD has had a couple of problems.

My glideslope needle got stuck periodically, in the one notch down position. I reported this on the forum.

CD was good about rapid replacement, as they were on the subsequent two HSI’s that developed problems.

BTW, #4 seems to work great.

Dick: I am not sure Andy and Bill are talking about the same HSI. There is mention of a “stuck needle” so that doesen’t sound like the Sandel.

BTW, Aviation Consumer just came out with a review of HSI’s, including the electric Century one used by Cirrus and the Sandel. They mention numerous maintanance problems on the electric Century, but have nothing but praise for the Sandel.
