Hard to believe, but yours truly has now lost the SEVENTH Vacuum Pump! Left Monterey and about 6 minutes into the first flight the panel lights came on! VAC Failure and ALT Vac working. I knew I should have never complained about the need for a standby vac.

Walt: I have 100 hrs. on my SR-20 and have had one vac. pump failure (that was at 20 hrs or less). There has to be some explanation from the factory (which brand are you using?) and or from the person installing these pumps. I understand you do have some installation techniques of importance, but I’m sure you know all about that. This is just crazy and annoying, I know. How many hours do you have now?

Airborne 211CC or CW, I can’t remember which way the pump turns, but it is Airborne. My experience with the Tiger was with SigmaTek and had no problems. I am not ready to blame Airborne, but the options are narrowing. I think Cirrus is revisiting the drawing board so we will see what gives.

We’ve got about 430 on the Hobbs and about 470TT. This last pump lasted a whopping 82.6 hours!
I heard somewhere that the some shaft (starter?) hits the vacuum pump housing. Since I don’t have an SR-20 I don’t know if they are close to each other. Could this be the cause? Anyone know or can check this rumor (or at least eyeball the engine)? Most engines I’ve seen don’t have the vacuum pump ANYWHERE near the starter or anything else that moves.
