Starlink Mini - Guide for Cirrus and other General Aviation users

That’s a pretty good-sized jump from “we don’t have technical data” (what Cirrus engineering said) to “it would void the complete warranty” (what the service center concluded). There’s no technical data to support vacuuming crumbs out of the back seat with a vacuum cleaner; would that also void the complete warranty?

FWIW, my G6 has had a couple of repairs covered under warranty following installation of the 28-volt socket in the back:

[They were, of course, repairs totally unrelated to the installation of the socket]

Yup. I too think it is a big leap. I would understand them potentially voiding part of the electrical system warranty. But this seems like phenomenal over-reach. I don’t know if it is my service centre making 1 + 1 = 3, or Cirrus have communicated this. However, I cannot walk away from 4+ years of remaining warranty. Frustrating!

Well, I just got the (almost certain) bad news from my CSC. My plane is in annual, and I thought this would be a good time to have a cigarette lighter receptacle installed. They felt they needed to call Cirrus to ask their view, and were told that Cirrus does not approve. They asked why, and didn’t get a clear answer. Apparently, my CSC is waiting to hear back from an engineer at Cirrus, but they told me that they are a CSC, and aren’t comfortable installing the receptacle, if Cirrus won’t approve.

So, next question. I haven’t installed the StarLink yet. Assuming I buy a LiFePO4 battery, I don’t like the idea of having a system running in the back of my plane that I can’t control. Is there a way to remotely turn off the StarLink, if it’s creating a problem? Should I not worry about that? Thanks.

Just keep the battery in the back seat in reach and unplug SL to kill it.

Now if the battery burns up ….

Buy an Anker C300DC and you’ll get 16 hrs of power. Get a 15ft 100w USB C cable which you can run from your dish along the side and under the carpet (clean install; takes all of a few mins). Attach the Anker unit to the rear seat cup holders with a bungee. Secures it and makes it easy to turn on/off sitting in the pilot seat. If you search the main Starlink thread for the word bungee and you should come across pics of my setup doing it this way. Hope this helps!

Yes, keep the battery right behind the center console as indicated here and it’s in easy reach!

Thanks Brad! I’ve read about 1,000 StarLink posts, but forgot about that one.

I had Lancaster Avionics, (KLNS-PA) install a 28 Volt 10 AMP for me ~ 10 years ago, in my G2 SR20 2007. I use it for a high power accessory plug. Looks like I can use if now for the Starlink mini now too. They installed it in the center console, facing vertical, beside my dimmer switch for the digitial fuel gauge brightness knob. It is connected to a dedicated circuit on the pannel.

Erik,

Appreciate the guide you built. For ship power do you have further details on where the A&P should wire the cigarette jack? I have a G6 and am wondering if there is a preferred break to leverage?

There is an access panel under the carpet here:

Some people have put it next to the Bagage Door.
This is where it is in my plane. It had this already for “Ice Box” airconditioning.

Thanks Erik,

I should have been more specific. What circuit breaker did you use? Did you run wiring from the front to that location or use exiting wiring?

Run a new wire from the circuit breaker panel, under the floor, to the access panel in the back.

Linked above… 5 Amp

A&P should be able to knock this out.

My CSC just agreed to install the cig lighter receptacle. I don’t have a price yet, but I trust them and they promised to be fair, which was good enough for me. They ran the wire from the baggage compartment to the circuit breaker panel and will put in a new CB (I had a blank spot). Then they are running that to main bus 2 for power. They said it wasn’t too bad of a job because I did it at annual, but would take more time otherwise.

I ordered the baggage compartment mount from Cirrus 3D prints and tried to do the installation yesterday. Unfortunately there is a defect in the kit they sent and the bottom clamp broke before I even got inside the airplane. I reached out yesterday for a replacement but have not heard back yet.

I put it between the access panel and the door.
Reasons:

  • more protected and does not have to be cared for when opening the access panel
  • farther away from the CAPS electronics
  • not behind the center post of the “Bradket”
My CSC suggested this position, and that’s what we did.

I did the roam plan like it states and tried to upgrade right away and Starlink said I have to wait until billing cycle end before they would upgrade to local priority. So basically it is worthless for about a month if you do it this way. Just buy the local priority plan immediately unless I’m missing something. I would guess the OP gets a benefit for the link at the top and roam but not for the local priority plan is why he wants you to select roam. I wonder if he knows that Starlink won’t upgrade you right away.

Starlink has changed how they allow you to purchase and service recently.

Do not activate with the roam plan on setup, you need to upgrade at activation or wait a month for it to change.

You used to be able to change plans at any point and it would take effect immediately. That does not seem to be the case any longer at least with roam and local priority.

I have been told that you are able to upgrade to Global priority service as an immediate change in service. ($250/month).

You could then downgrade to local which would change at the bill cycle date. I do not know of a way to order the Starlink mini with a local priority plan from check out.

The link above takes you to the Mini site.

I am not aware of a way of Selecting a local priority on checkout of the mini. If someone is able to show how to get a mini ordered with local priority from the start, that would be great and would happy to update the link above.

I have recommended people purchase from best buy or Walmart and then activate your Starlink with a local priority plan at activation. I know that works well.

PF Flyers just refused my request during annual. Same reason.

That is what I did and on Erik’s recommendation. Local Priority at activation was easy.
