How do you get to local priority at activation? I’m trying now, but got the attached strewn and need to make a choice. Thanks.
Choose the land mobility, and it will have other options under it, local and global.
Please screen shot those and post if possible
I wonder if you could swap one of these into the existing usb c in a g7? I believe it’s the same supplier. Wondering if that would also void the warranty?
That got me to Local Priority. All set. Thanks!
Seems anything voids the warranty. The new larger USB port may require more power than the convenience transformer can handle (if the G7 still has that transformer, bet it does).
I’ve been told that there’s no upgrade path (as of yet) for the existing USB ports. That very well may change (I’d bet they’ll move to these new ones at some point)… but as of right now you can only replace a given part with the same part - for warrantied planes at least or the factory service center. If it’s compatible as a one for one swap (not sure about that as Roger wrote with potentially needing more power), independent shops may be willing to do it, but likely many authorized CSC’s wouldn’t want to touch it.
Quick note on application setup for those of us using Garmin Pilot with a Starlink…
Garmin Pilot will prefer Iridium > SWX > ADS-B > Internet for display, In that order.
So, if you’re connected to your panel via Flightstream, GP might show ADS-B radar instead of Internet radar.
To see Internet weather when connected to Starlink and Flightstream… from the Maps page, find the setting for “Auto-Select Layers Based on Connected Devices” Make sure that switch is turned off.
Then you can select Internet radar and lightning and it will persist.
Hi Michael - doing mine at annual now. How much did they charge you for this add on? I am providing all the parts. Tx
It was either 5 or 5-1/2 hours. California rates, so $180/hour. The total (with parts) was just over $1100. They said it took longer, but didn’t charge me for the learning time.
A CSC I know just fitted the power part in the cargo area to a still-under-warranty G6 belonging to a student of mine.
if i signed up for the local priority, do i still want to change to something else after? i read something about roam somewhere. Thanks in advance.
Short answer… No! Your good.
The two Plan options are Local Priority & Global Priority. Those are under the “Land Mobility” Category when activating.
The other options are not for “In-Flight” use.
Roam and Roam Unlimited are Limited to 100mph. Great for RV and Road Trips.
No, local priority is the correct plan you need long term (only need Global if you’re going offshore).
Roam is meant more for folks traveling/camping and is limited to 100mph speeds.
Finally got mine installed yesterday. Still have some wire management to accomplish.
Had a hiccup on the activation. As others have noted activation is a bit tricky these days. I purchased my mini from Walmart so I thought I would be home free but I already have Starlink in my RV. Adding another to the account would not let me do anything but Roam. I had to create a new account to get it activated properly.
Still looking at doing a circuit break and cigarette lighter install but I am still under warranty so may wait a while.
Have several trips coming up including Miami, the Kentucky Derby and trip to Massachusetts, hoping for good results.
Just found this sb on the manufacturer website. I’m not 100% sure, but think this is the unit in the g7 maybe other gens as well. Interesting how it’s worded.
“ This modification (MOD) to the TA360 series includes a minor hardware change that enables the unit to support the power interface for particular consumer product requirements.”
Wonder if this would allow this to be replaced under warranty.
Yes. My service center said they had no issue swapping out for the new one so that is what I am doing vs running the new circuit.
Was the process of acquiring the modified one simple? Or did they require/request you pull yours, and send it in to be modified.
It will be interesting to see if this can drive the SL after the update.
Flew SFO to Maui today on Hawaiian Airlines… they offer free Starlink. I don’t usually buy the internet on flights but free is a good deal.
Absolutely amazing 150+mbps with presumably 160+ passengers connected
Was able to connect to home TV and watch recording of F1 qualifying. Nice to have real Apple/Prime TV on iPad
Starlink tech just amazes me how well it works
It does work surprisingly well, it is a new age. I saw an article written by John Zimmerman recently. Pretty much sums up my view and my concerns with SL. Worth a read. Don’t be that guy.
Technology in itself is never bad. How we choose to use it can be. SL has not changed my world nor do I view it as a game changer. But it does add some seriously capability that has aviation applications.
