Sandel v. Century HSI

Re: SR20 “C” with Sandel or SR22

The Sandel has “auto-slew” which automatically sets the course indicator to the new waypoint on your flight plan. Does the Century HSI do this?

Is Cirrus setting the Sandel up so that you can simultaneously display two course indicators from each of the two Garmin navradios? If so, is there a standard Garmin CDI as a backup to the Sandel?

No. The Century course selector has to be set manually with each course change.

The CDI (course deviation indicator) on the Sandel is for NAV 1 (whether its VOR,GPS,or LOC from Garmin 1). The #2 Garmin supplies a bearing display to the Sandel (like a RMI) so that for example you can see that your bearing to the XYZ VOR is 227 degrees, but the CDI for the number 2 Nav is on a standard VOR/LOC indicator.

If you fly VFR only the Sandel is overkill but if you fly IFR the Sandel is even better than fantastic. Don’t leave home without it!!

Sandel’s recently released TAWS (Terrain Awareness and Warning System) has a newer illumination technology and a bulb life of 3500 hours. Expect this brighter, longer-lasting illumination in the Sandel HSI some time next year. Sandel won’t say when, but I’m guestimating 2nd quarter. I don’t know if existing units can be retrofit.

Can you switch between Nav 1 and 2 on the Sandel?

In a word, NO. The #2 CDI is on a different unit. What you can get is BEARING (RMI) info from Nav 2 on the Sandel.
