The last weekend of this coming April my CFII and I will be flying from Lincoln Park, NJ (N07) to Lansing, MI (LAN) to visit my brother. The next day we are off to Lawrenceville, GA (LZU) to visit with my stepdaughter and then back home to N07 the following day.
I have planned relief stops at ERI (day 1), LUK (day 2), and ROA (day 3) but what I am looking for is help/suggestions for interesting places to stop enroute.
For example:
An airport with an interesting or difficult approach
LUK (Lunken in Cincinnati, I believe) has a pretty decent airport restaurant in the old terminal building. If you’re concerned about fuel prices, LOU (Bowman field, Louisville, KY - 90 miles west of LUK) has good avgas prices at $2.16 gal self serv.
If you’re flying IFR, I have, at times, had delays getting a take-off clearance as the airport is in CVG’s class B airspace. I would guess, timing is everything though.
I have not found many interesting places to stop between Louisville, KY and northern Florida. There seem to be a lot of small quiet airports on that leg of the trip. If anyone knows of an airport that is more ‘interesting’, I’d love to hear it as I make the LOU - ORL or FMY flight ore often than I would like to and a good fuel/pit stop location would be appreciated.
The best place I’ve found is Athens, where the courtesy car is a retired unmarked Police car with intenal lights and all! Food is a 10 minute drvie.
If you want an “official” ride in a police car call me and I’ll arrange one for you. I can even arrange for an “official” tour of the jail!!
Larry,
As for an interesting place to stop there is always Columbus, BAK there is a pretty decent restaurant on the field and all kinds of eateries 5-10 mins away. There is also a small museum on the field 2 minute walk form the terminal depicting the history of the former air base. Columbus is also noted for its architecture and there is an architectural tour that is available through the visitors center.
Rick, I remember one all too official ride in a police car! Thanks but I’d rather not recreate it!
Also, my father-in-law, just retired as a chief of police - I’m sure he would be more than happy to give me an ‘official’ ride. It would be the destination that I would fear!
