Has anyone had any experience with using heat shields in the SR20? Since the dash on ours is one of the ones which warped, we would like to prevent this in the future after the new one is installed.
We are having a debate over whether to buy custom heat shields or a cockpit canopy. Since our plane is hangared most of the time we really don’t need a full canopy. Heat shields should certainly serve the purpose. However, installing heat shields means putting VELCRO around all the windows to secure the heat shield. My view of this is not too pleasant. It’s such a nice, smooth and contemporary interior that I fear putting VELCRO around the windows will really make it look tacky. Sort of amateurish. Does anyone have any heat shield (or canopy) experience they would like to share?

Good news and bad news.
The good news: Kennon heat shields do not require velcro. They stay in by virtue of their snug fit. I had them in my Warrior and they worked great; I also own a set for my SR20.
The bad news: Cirrus discourages using them, because it apparently isn’t good for the plastic to have the heat reflected back against the windshield.
The Bruce type cover has its own potential problem - things being blown in between the cover and the windshield and causing scratching. For this reason, Aviation Consumer recommends the Kennon shields. However, it may not be the shield of choice in the Cirrus.

There is a good discussion of the pros and cons of both on the Kennon web site. See http://www.avweb.com/sponsors/kennon/index.html
See the FAQs and interview with company official (they make both shields and covers).
I have used both for a long time (outside parking). I never noticed any problems. Bruce’s cover will serve more then one purpose but it is bulky. Kennon shields works very well without velcro. I just made a set for a Diamond Jet, cheap too. Only one caution and it is with the outside cover, you want to keep it clean and make sure it is a good fit, if the wind blows the loose material then you will get scraches. You can actually lay a felt type material over the windshield then lay your cover over it, this way the felt material can be kept clean (that’s what is important). Look at other airplances that have been parked outside for 10 years and no problems. Have a great coved Cirrus day. Caution: Remove before flight
