Garmin GPSMAP 295 Update

For all you Garmin GPSMAP 295 owners out there, software version 2.20 is indeed available on the Garmin web site http://garmin.com/products/gpsmap295/http://garmin.com/products/gpsmap295/ under the “Updates & Downloads” tab. (Thanks, Chris!)

In includes, among other things, WAAS support. I downloaded it this morning with no problems at all and the unit still seems to work fine. My pervious version was 2.06.

I just discovered that to use the WAAS feature you have to “enable” it first.

You do this by going to the Main Menu (by pressing the Menu button twice), selecting the System tab, then changing the WAAS box to “Enabled.”

Can you update the 295 like the 430?

I presume your question is Can you update the 430 like the 295? I don’t have a 430, but since WAAS is not approved for IFR yet, I don’t think so.

As to how, physically, you update the 430’s software, I don’t know.

You take it out of the plane, and take it to a Garmin dealer, and they do it. I presume they either swap a chip or reload a flash chip inside the unit.

I just flew to a nearby airport with a Garmin dealer on the field, and they updated the software without removing the unit from the aircraft. It took about 15 minutes, at least 5 minutes of which was waiting for the 430 to reacquire satellites and figure out its location after its “brain transplant” (sort of how I feel when I get up at 5:30 am to go to work).

That makes sense - our local Garmin dealer is at Brisbane International which is not a GA-friendly airport, so that’s why we have removed the units for updating.
