TKS

Anyone know a link to get info on TKS anti-ice systems?

Casey,

Try this link: http://www.weepingwings.com/.

(I assume you just wanted a general TKS link; I don’t know of any real information regarding TKS on Cirrus planes)

Steve,

Thanks for the lightning quick response!

Great sight, very informitive. I believe this will be the system CD will be using. Should be retrofitable to elder aircraft.

I think we all believe that lack of de-icing is a significant weakness in the utility of our Cirrus aircraft. But the TKS system is prohibitively expensive costing in the range of $50,000 per aircraft.
Recently I found a company that looks promising to produce a low cost system adaptable to any plane. The cost is $15,000 but is only in the early stages of development. The Lancair is one of their target aircraft which leads me to believe that the Cirrus composite would be most compatible with this system.
Please chack out www.airplanedeice.com.

Brian,

Maybe I’m missing something. Looks to me like the TKS system would be in the 18k-20k range after checking their sight.

I think the heated tape system you refer to is similar to the type Cirrus was looking into, however this system still requires separate systems for the prop and windshield. With TKS everything’s ready to go.

Northcoast technologies is the company working on the electric (heating) method of deicing for Lancair and Barons. I saw their display at Oshkosh and it looked promising. They said it would work on our SR2Xs but is not now approved for Cirrii. It will not be “known icing” but a “get out of jail system.” You can see it at www.airplanedeice.com. It does not include windshield deicing.

I am pretty sure that the KNOWN TKS anti-icing product is in the $50,000 range. If you want an anti-icing system that is not certified for known icing conditions then the cost is in the $20,000 range. I hope that clears any misconceptions.
