The conspiracy of big numbers :) {humor}

Brothers and sisters,

A strange and terrible thing is happening all around me. I don’t know how to explain it other than to say – people are looking at me funny. I think they are all changing. Especially non-pilots. Something is happening to them.

It seems to have started when I expressed my relief that a repair bill for my airplane was only $600. Something about the word “only” seems to have triggered something in these non-pilots.

Lately, it’s been getting worse. I explained to someone that my little data card subscriptions, combined with paper charts, were only running me about a $1000/yr. Again that look from non-pilots - as if I didn’t understand what “only” meant anymore.

Now it’s everywhere. My fuel bill is only a $150, my oil change only a couple hundred, my annual only a few thousand. I dare not even tell my non-pilot friends how cheap it all is. I mean, really, that Garmin 530 is a steal at 15K.

So watch yourselves, brothers and sisters. There is a conspiracy against big numbers I think. You should see the way they look at me: as if somehow by flying I’M THE ONE losing my sense of what expensive means.

Dean

PS – Did any of you notice how cheap a used 737 has gotten? We should look into one!

Hi Dean,
All these numbers fade into insignificance when you realize that because you have spent this money, you can climb into your airplane and fly to some place where people won’t look at you funny!

Cheers,

Roger

Wait until you tell them your overhaul was only $18K. :wink:

Like the US general said, “a billion here, a billion there, pretty soon you’re talking real money!”

Hi Clyde,

I believe http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/e/a131563.htmlthis quotation is actually due to the late Senator Everett Dirksen (R.-Illinois). He must have owned an airplane…

Cheers,

Roger
