The Awsome Arnav (Engine Moniter Pirep)

It’s here, it’s worth the wait, it’s much better than the Arnav literature would lead you to believe, and I can’t imagine anyone being discontented with Arnav now!

So far, everything they said it would do, it does. Compared to conventional engine analyzing equipment, it appears to be no contest.

Some pleasant surprises. There’s a separate screen you can scroll to, not displayed in the Arnav web site, that gives lots of additional information. The left hand display can be reduced after leaning, or eliminated. And the big surprise…all new Arnav software, which I found dramatically improves the look of the display. Much easier to understand how to navigate through the displays; brighter colors (I think). Really looks cool!

As the number one unit (I think), some little issues. Like no POH. Software seems to need to be continually updated.

I’m bracing for the installation bill. Wouldn’t be surprised if it took 40 hours, or more.

When all is said and done, my opinion is that it’s an incredible improvement over the base Arnav. I hold my breath in saying this, b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-but well worth the price, based on first use.

Andy,

Great PIREP - I’m especially happy to read it, since my ARNAV Engine Monitoring is being installed as we speak.

I do have a POH supplement (of sorts); it was sent to me ahead of time by ARNAV. It is well written and interesting as far as it goes - but it is pretty skimpy, and it’s evident from the screenshots that there’s lots of functionality that is NOT described.

As for installation cost, I’m happy to report that my Cirrus Service Center (Lincoln Park Aviation, N07) agreed to cap the installation price at an equivalent 12 hours. I’m not sure that they’d do it again, and I can’t comment on THIS installation (I haven’t seen it yet); but previous work has been done exactly as promised, on time, and has consistently exceeded expectations. Their shop is the cleanest I have seen anywhere - certainly not what I was expecting to find in Northern New Jersey. Ditto for the attitude, friendliness and professionalism of the entire staff, headed by Frank Galella. They’re always backlogged several weeks for scheduled work; on the other hand, they spring into action like a rescue St. Bernard’s if you have an emergency need (I had two in one day, and they were really THERE for me; even gave me a courtesy car to go into town and get lunch while I was stuck.)

As long as I’m using dog metaphors… I hound these guys for information every day, and they’re always very responsive. Overall, I’m very impressed. [I didn’t mean to turn this into an advertisement - but with so much mediocrity out there, it’s nice to be able to report on someone who’s getting it right.]

Anyway, I’ll supplement your PIREP with one of my own in a couple of weeks, along with a report on the GPSS that’s also being added.

Hey - how about a write-up on the leaning procedures you’re using now that you have all this data? Also, did you buy the PC software to interpret everything?

  • Mike.

I did buy the PC software package. As the plane has more and more added to it, incremental add-on’s become less and less expensive as a percentage of the total cost!

What is all in cost? are there any features in the new software worth getting if you do not put in the monitoring?
