Heading to Miami this afternoon. Seems like a long list of FBO’s on the airport directory. Any suggestions for Cirrus flyers (vs. the corp jets) at MIA and TMB?
Charlie; I am based at TMB and live in Miami. Unless you “need” to land MIA, stay away. Big Boys and corporate only. Choose you airport depending where in town you are going. Tamami is south, Opa Locka is north.
TMB has a visitors ramp on the north side @ Air Sal. Also self service fuel at $2.14 per gallon 100LL. Ask to use the north runway, and on 121.7, ask for directions to spot 2. Let me know when you will be in and I will arrange for the Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders to greet you at the ramp.
Dennis
I agree with Dennis, however, AirSal has little to offer beyond cheap fuel (when last there they only had one can of oil and it had been on the shelf for months). Reliance at Spots 12 and 13 (Rwy9R/27L) has a lot more to offer in terms of Pilots lounge, wx access, etc.
I’ll second the emotion about MIA. The fees will kill ya. TMB or OPF are much better suggestions.

Well…I missed the cheerleaders for sure…Signature gals weren’t very sympathetic at MIA when I said “WHAT!!!” to the 87.00 charge for dropping off my wife. She had to be downtown and was late for a meeting so MIA was the only option...but 87 bucks!! I was on their ramp for 3 minutes (could have left the engine running except for the fact I had to carry my wife's bag in...). When I asked Signature what the 22 bucks for them was for…“it’s a handling fee”…I said “what did you do?” …one of the girls said “for talking to you”…she really said that…My LAST time at MIA.
Charlie,
The fact that Signature FBOs are so prevalent across the nation is proof positive that these are the End Times.
Cheers,
Roger
Well, it’s not as if we didn’t warn you. For $87 bucks, I would have driven your wife down town.
Charlie,
You should post your comments on http://www.airnav.com/airport/KMIAthe AirNav page for MIA so other folks will be able to avoid the Signature FBO there.
I find http://www.airnav.com/AirNav an indispensable resource for selecting airports and FBOs. From them I learned that Signature at MIA charges a staggering $4.09 a gallon for 100LL — more than even http://www.airnav.com/airport/KCGXMeigs Field.
Cheers,
Roger

True, but when you can use them for free (i.e. angel flight type flights), they can be pretty nice! Comfy lounges for snoozing… the last time I stayed in one for a while they had a wide selection of free “pay-per-view” movies on a huge TV, nice weather briefing area, free newspaper and use of a brand new courtesy car, etc…
Not defending their prices, just saying that if you can afford it or if you can get it for free, they do provide some nice services.

MUST. NOT. MAKE. OBVIOUS. JOKE. Arrgggh, can’t hold it in any longer:
For $87 bucks, I would have driven your wife down town.
For $187, I would have kept her.

At least at Meigs you get a beautiful view of Chicago when landing and departing.
I agree that AIRNAV is a wonderful source of information.

Jerry,
Indeed! This photo was taken by Max in August this year. The hi-res version is spectacular - a print hangs on my office wall.

c’est magnifique!!

What a great photo! Thanks go to AOPA and everyone else who prevailed over evil to keep Meigs open.
