So I’ve got this nice spiffy new composite aircraft coming to my neighborhood in five to six months.
About a year ago, I walked into the San Carlos Airport offices and asked to be put on the waiting list for a hangar. After everyone picked themselves off the floor from laughing so hard, it was explained to me that the waiting lists had been frozen closed for the last seven years because they had gotten so long.
Similar story in Palo Alto.
q1: Does anyone have any hangar space to spare/sublet in PAO/SQL/HWD? I will even consider taking on a partner for this bird if you have the space.
q2: What’s the best way to protect my baby from the UV and other elements? Is there anything I can do besides the usual “Bruce’s custom covers” hack? Does it make sense to custom design wing covers (gack!)?

Paul, hangar space may still be available
in Marina, near Watsonville for $350/mo. I have my
Bellanca in Alex Spanos’ hangar in SQL where
he keeps his GIV. Try A. G. Spanos Jet Center
He keeps prices down for cool birds. Does this
entitle me to a ride? The problem is getting
to SQL by ground.

Paul, didn’t mean to give you palpitations.
I meant SCK, not SQL. SQL is hopeless.

Did you solve this problem?..I have one showing up in 9 months.
Also : there seem to be a load of Cirrus aircraft on the tie down spots in both PAO and SQl…does it really matter?
Welcome Jonathan. You may have set a record for oldest resurrected thread… Also since you have a Cirrus on order I recommend joining COPA as a full member. Just the discounts alone will offset the membership cost.
Lots of discussion here about SRs on ramps. Where I’m from the waiting list is years long too. It’s a common problem in the busier metropolitan areas.
I’d say in the Bay Area you have advantages and disadvantages. For example you don’t need to worry about power access for pre-heating, but you may have a bit more concern about corrosion depending on exactly how close to the water the field is located. The best thing to do is get a good set of covers. Anecdotally I’d say most ramp people use a just a canopy cover, while some people also use wing and tail feather covers.
You should reach out to Max Trescott as he is both a long time Cirrus expert and is based in the Bay Area.

Hello
Congrats for your project! That’s really exciting.
But I don’t have any hangar space myself, but I’ve heard that sometimes it helps to network directly with other pilots at the local airports. Maybe try attending some aviation meetups or events at PAO, SQL, or HWD. You might find someone who’s willing to sublet or share space.
And for UV protection, besides Bruce’s custom covers, you could consider a UV-resistant wax or sealant for the aircraft’s exterior. Custom wing covers could be a good idea too, especially if they’re made from a material that blocks UV rays. It might be a bit of an investment, but it’s worth it to protect your new plane.
Best of luck for everything!
