GPSS

I just had the GPSS mod added to my STEC 55, and am very confused by one point: Lets say I want to finish my flight with an ILS approach. Do I keep it in GPSS mode until I am intercepting the ILS, and then switch the 55 into NAV/APR mode? Or will the system do the switch automatically?

The GPSS manual is silent on this issue, they only show examples of GPS approaches, no VOR or ILS approaches. I emailed STEC some days ago, and they have not responded.

This issue does not come up with the 55X, because the manual states that the 55X will do the switchover automatically.

On my 55x, if you don’t manually change it off the GPSS mode, it never will show a glidslope indication, and the localizer will be off the GPS rather than the vloc. (I know this first hand, if you get my drift!)

Also, on the 55x you use the nav mode with (vloc), not the approach mode, for an ILS. The unit knows by the frequency that it’s an ILS and will show “appr” on the lcd display. Approach mode is used on GPS approaches.

I would suspect the 55 would behave the same.
