Compensation for agent error?

HI,

An American Airlines agent found us a flight, but we needed to hurry to get to Kennedy. When we got to Kennedy we realized that, while he clearly knew we needed tickets to Costa Rica (he said there were 6 seats available on one of the flights he searched) he sold us tickets to San Jose, CALIFORNIA not San Jose, Costa Rica.American Airlines responded quickly. They didn’t assume responsibility, but they offered $550 per person (four people) in vouchers or the equivalent in “miles”. They told me that they cannot offer monetary compensation. Here are my questions: Is it true that they do not offer monetary compensation? Am I justified in rejecting this offer “for my troubles”, and working to pursue more equitable compensation for our losses?

Please help.
Thanks!

I didn’t find the right solution from the Internet.
