My friend, the author Rinker Buck has come out with a new book called “Shane Comes Home.” Some of you may know Rinker from his popular aviation memoir titled, “Flight of Passage.” Anyway, I went to a reading the other night here in NYC and the book is just terrific. It’s about Shane Childers, the first Marine to die in the Iraq War, two years ago this week.

Now I know some of you might remember me best for my colorful political commentary during the recent elections, but this book is largely apolitical. Instead, it’s a tribute to a U.S. Marine who made the ultimate sacrifice.

It’s a worthy read. Here’s the Amazon link

Jeff:

Thank you for this book referral. Can’t wait to read it.

A couple of years ago, Rhonda and I listened to “Flight of Passage” on audio book, read by Rinker. I was stunned. We reached our destination and we weren’t done. Couldn’t wait to come home to finish the book on tape. Anyway, Rinker made such an impression on me that Rhonda and I made a special trip to OSH to hear him speak and read.

WOW, what a time and special privilege to meet the man who writes like liquid gold. On that same trip, we also got to meet and greet Richard Bach.

Oh, the memories. And we got our picture taken with him to boot.

So, even though I haven’t read his newest, I can attest along with you to the outstanding author that he is. Almost want to go down tomorrow and get “Passage of Flight” to listen to again.

Thanks Jeff for the recommendation. You circle in High company!

I’m an absolute sucker for books and movies about dreaming big dreams, and then pursuing them. Corny as it sounds, reading “Flight of Passage” is probably 50% of the reason I decided to pursue my Private Certificate and aspire to buy a Cirrus. For anyone who hasn’t read Flight of Passage, please, please do so.

I hope I like the newest book just as well, but I don’t see how that’s possible.

Jeff,

Thanks for bringing this up. I loved “Flight of Passage”. Few books stick with me like that one. I have listened to the audio version as well.

He would be a fantastic guest speaker at a future migration. Any chances?

Hey David,

Actually, the year Rinker spoke at OSH, the year before last, I was also there for his talk. Too bad we hadn’t met then, it would have been fun to hang out at OSH together. I actually flew to OSH with Rinker that year. He happens to also be a helluva pilot. Do you plan to go again, to OSH?

Jeff

Jeff:

Would be fun to hook up and hang together there. Don’t know about this year. Planning on M3 for sure. How about you, M3 and or OSH? Lots to talk about when we gather together. I look forward to it.

Yahh, but did you have a water bag???

Jim:

If you want a real treat, PU the audio version read by Rinker himself. We picked it up at our local library. It will rekindle the flame all over again.

Jim,

Now that you mention it, I read “Flight of Passage” shortly before I started my private lessons. I never connected the two as I have always had the goal on “my list”. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I bet it added impetus for me. Thanks for reminding me of the power of the written word.

You know, that’s a great idea. If the powers behind the migration would like, I can talk to RInker about it.

Just let me know.
