Starlink Mini - Guide for Cirrus and other General Aviation users

I think you need to do it on the Starlink website….

It won’t let me -

You are right…. This is new….. hopefully doesn’t affect service…. Wonder why they did that.

You know, I’ve watched Starlink now for a while. They seem very disorganized and flailing around to build this business. At least they are flexible  The one thing we can be certain of is change with SL.

I tried to see if I could change my plan just to check. Saw the same thing. If you press learn more it seems they have restrictions on business plans. Don’t know why.

No and mine is in the same place.

I have global on my mini. Hopefully it’s just a glitch in the matrix. Hoping they get you worked out.

Interestingly enough, I have one gentleman who reached out to me directly where his mini is assigned to the Global Priority Plan, yet in his case SL won’t let him switch to the Local Priority Plan… They’re saying the the Mini needs to be on the Global plan. Exact opposite of your scenario.

I love Starlink and the functionality it brings to us, but there are certainly deficiencies in the customer service aspect where two reps can be on opposite sides of the spectrum with their guidance. Of course if the engineering of the app/site plan change functionality was consistent the human response aspect would be irrelevant, but that workflow seems to be ever changing and problematic as well.

I feel they’ll eventually get things right and work through these issues, yet know it’s frustrating for many in the meantime. Hopefully they can get your issue sorted to get you on the proper plan.

I’m just ordered starlink and curious do people run there ForeFlight traffic on “internet” traffic now? Is there any pro’s/cons to that?

If you have ADS-B in, of any type, it’s much better than internet traffic.

Internet traffic will be delayed and does not show all traffic, only those the nearby receivers can “see”.

Posted in the other thread but I was able to get SL to switch from the expensive global priority to local priority with a few rounds of customer support. They gave me a house credit. I’ll bed they’ll gladly do the opposite.

If by Foreflight traffic you meant ADSB, its always better than Internet traffic….. way less lag….

Another try and miss…. This cable Amazon.com: Starlink Mini Power Cable 3M/10FT Cigarette Lighter to DC Cord, 12V-24V Car Adapter DC Power Cable, 18AWG Heavy-Duty Car Charger Waterproof Starlink Mini Accessories for RV Truck Ship : Automotive will not work with Ecoflow River 2 via Cigarrette socket….. Starlink goes on and off multiple times.

I wanted to get a little more juice than the 120V adapter , that BTW is the only one that reliably works with Ecoflow River 2

I agree. I run internet on FF off SL. But for traffic I really rely on the avionics which show ADS-B. The Wx stuff is better across SL. As long as you have another source to display traffic that works.

Got it - is there a way to make ForeFlight select Ads-B traffic over internet tracfic?. Because I have a iPad mount but would like the iPad connected to SL for music and calling Atis, weather ext.

Don’t know what avionics you have…. But with my IFD, I connect it to the starlink and so is my Ipad…. And the foreflight has the two sources and it prioritizes ADSB

Not that I know of at least with my avionics. Ivan’s post with IFD’s is intriguing. I don’t have IFD’s.

This :up_arrow:

No different than GPS Priority.

So this has been a total shit show trying to switch from Local Priority to Global Priority. I closed the ticket and opened a new one hoping I would get a different answer… which I did. The next rep said I needed to transfer my Mini from residential to business in order to get Global. Then told me you can’t transfer until after 90 days of service. But the icing on the cake was that Mini’s are banned from being transferred to Business.

So my existing Starlink Mini is stuck on Local Priority. And I didn’t want to risk canceling Local Priority and not being able to get it back as I don’t think you can get Local Priority anymore on a Residentially registered Mini.

So, I went to Best Buy yesterday and bought a 2nd Mini to specifically register it as Business and get Global Priority. When I went to register it I got the following menu:

So I selected Business, but the next menu only showed me Local Priority Plans. So I went back and selected Maritime. This allowed me to select Global Priority.

Hopefully this actually works now with the 550mph limit and globally. I will be able to test it on Sunday with my flight to Cancun.

Anyway, it appears Starlink is now locking equipment to specific plans and making it super hard to switch. I dunno if this a temporary or a new way of doing business. Kind of annoying.

Sorry to hear you’ve experienced a cluster accomplishing what should have been a fairly easy task.

As a separate data point, the user who was unable to do the reciprocal (global to local priority) ended up reaching out to SL multiple times. No dice with the first three reps. The fourth rep was able to accomplish it. Seems that they have a varying degree of training/knowledge/abilities among reps. We’ve seen this with past issues as well, one rep will say no and the next says yes - or can/can’t do different things, bit of a luck of the draw. Key is persistence and reaching out repetitively.

Glad I started out with my mini in a business account. That cannot be a technical limitation, just another of their arcane administration decisions.

Having two might make more sense given what we do with it. Just use the pause service option frequently on the Global one.
