Oshkosh Update?

I’ve never been to Oshkosh before but am planning to be there for Thurs and Fri of this coming week, among other reasons to see the Cirrus Owners meeting. Logistics questions for veterans please:

  • Since I don’t have a plane, my plan is to fly commercial to O’Hare, rent a car, drive northward, and see what is the closest motel vacancy to the Oshkosh area, realizing that it could be very far away. Anyone have experience with the motel ecology of EAA, recommendations of places to try? (Realize that camping under the plane, rather than relying on a motel, is the Oshkosh Way.)

  • Then planning to drive to Oshkosh for each day’s events. Is there parking for cars there, as well as parking for airplanes? Is this a feasible scheme?

  • And, of course, if anyone is planning to fly to Oshkosh from the SF Bay area (my new home) on Tues or Wed, and needs an extra passenger for ballast…

Thanks, hope to see many of you there. jf

I travelled to Oskosh for several years (unfortunately not this year) and always found it difficult to get accomodation in the area. Once I got the last room in a motel in appleton; but in all the other years, coming from the south, I took a motel in the Milwaukee area (eg. the Courtyard in Brookfield). Instead of using my time for searching a closer place, I accepted the 90 min drive, which is very convienient. If you arrive at OSH before 9.30 am, you won’t have any trouble to find a parking place. Parking is for EAA members only; however, if you aren’t a member yet, you’ll automatically become one when buying the entrance ticket. If you are a member, bring your member card.

I wish I were there!

Jim: My 5th trip is coming up, which doesn’t make me an expert yet. I have stayed in Appleton, Green Bay, and worse. This year, however, just like my last 2 times, I will be staying with a local family. Oshkosh has a B and B style arrangement, where locals open up their homes to EAAers for reasonable rates. I’ve had my wife and father in law with me once, and a friend on another trip. We’ve stayed with the same family and gotten to like it much better than hotels. To begin your search for such an arrangement, start with www.oshkoshcvb.org, or call 877-303-9200. Staying in Oshkosh is clearly the best way to go. Good luck.
