GNS430 IFR legal on pickup?

When we pick up our SR20 will the duel GNS430s have a current database? And a cheapskate question, can you just update the card in the primary GNS430 and switch it to the other if the primary dies?

I can tell you only that my own 430s had current databases at delivery.

With regard to updating one database only – I can’t see any reason that it wouldn’t work, EXCEPT that if you don’t have matching databases in the two units, the crossfill functions won’t work. From my point of view, that feature alone is worth the price of having both databases the same.

Art,

When I picked up my SR20 in January, the database expired during the time I was there (during the 3 day training). Cirrus updated the db in both Garmins for me (for free) before I left.

Art,

If memory serves, if you get the flash burner and the internet subscription, the dual garmin subscription is only fractionally more expensive than buying a single subscription (i.e. much less than 2x).

The trick is to have a laptop running win95/98 and burn your own flash parts. You’ll pay for it within the first year.

Paul

Sure you can but in a dual 430 installation you will get a crossfeed error. In other words the two units with different database versions will not talk to each other but independently they will function. For cost savings on updates use the Jeppensen Skywriter and download from the web. I understand where you are coming from and agree on the cost. You pay for a subscription and then Jep surcharges you for a second use of the database, like something is wearing out or additional maintenance is required. Isn’t it great to have a monopoly!!!

Does that mean you have to buy 2 updates from Jeppesen?

Yes, but they have a special rate for 2, and it’s not too much more than 1. Best buy is to do the download over the internet.

Does Jeppesen have it’s updated flash card burner out yet? I for one will wait for the new verson as it sounds like it will be more user friendly. This appears to be the cheapest way out.

The current flash burner is not user unfriendly.

They fixed it so it burns the new garmin cards (yea!), but it’s the same old UI.

It does NOT work with windows 2000/Xp. Boo hiss.

In my recent conversations with the techs at Jepp, the “new burner” is a couple of products. There will be new DataWriter software to support Windows 2000 which should be released later this year.
There will also be a new hardware device which can read/write PCMCIA cards and is connected via a USB connection (which also requires new drivers). The existing DataWriter will not be changed. They didn’t give me a date when the new hardware device will be ready, but it may not be until 2002.

Personally, I would fly partial panel IMC at night in a thunderstorm before ever putting Windows 98 on anything I own again. Or maybe just pay for the regular subscription.

Or, you can do what I do. We have a laptop at work running Windows 98 (we share it for road trips, etc). When it’s time to update, I download to my desktop, copy the Jeppesen file (2,128 KB) to a CD with a CD burner, walk it to the laptop which has the Skybound Datawriter software installed, and update the data cards that way. It’s a little bit of a hassle, but a whole lot cheaper that the regular subscription. I’ve done two updates so far with no problems. If you don’t have a laptop at work, maybe you have a friend…

I have the process detailed out in easy-to follow steps if anyone wants to email me. The Jeppesen Installation Guide and User’s Manual doesn’t describe this method, although Jeppesen told me over the phone it would work before I subscribed. The key is to have the downloaded file located in the X:Program FilesJeppesenSkybound DatawriterData folder.
