I think you’ll find that the training is fairly standardized, and there will be limited time available for training beyond the standardized course. I also think you’ll find that a tablet will only be a hinderance, unless you have the software (such as GP) down cold. My suggestion is to simply concentrate on the systems knowledge and flight skills for the check ride. You’ve already got a leg up with your G3000 experience, so I think you’ll find the sim work pretty straight forward. You can easily figure out a tablet during over dinners during mentor time.
If you prefer to avoid iOS platform, you’ll be fine with GP. I have both, but I’ve become accustomed to Foreflight. At the time I switched, only FF had the Jepp charts, which I prefer. Now that GP has Jepp integration, I could argue for either FF or GP. There are advantages to both. If you like I’d be happy to help you set up W&B profiles in GP. The odd nuance with the SF50 is that the rear seats get added to the basic empty weight, so it’s nice to get a few typical seating profiles set up. This differs from the TBM, where seat removal is more difficult, and the payload is higher, so seat removal is less common. We could do it pretty quickly over a Zoom or Teams call.
I’d also be happy to give you some pointers on the G3000 integrations by Daher vs Cirrus. When I moved from the SF50 to the TBM 960, I was pretty surprised at some of the differences. I prefer the SF50 automation, although I think Daher has a leg up on redundancy. Not many people have experience in multiple G3000 platforms, and some instructors would look at me cross eyed when I tried to explain the differences. The SF50 has some nice AT and AT enhancements, that I think you’ll like. Feel free to drop me a PM, if you’d like to talk in person.
FWIW, my wife and I loved the SF50. If it weren’t for our 1,200 nm milk run, we’d still be in the SF50. From a comfort and convenience standpoint, it’s tough to beat.
Bob’s right. The gold tint windows on the SF50 definitely help with reducing solar heat gain in the cockpit. You need it was that great view out of the cockpit! That said, over-temp on the iPad hasn’t been a big issue for me in either the TBM or my CJs. In the TBM, I kept it on my lap. In the CJ3, I have a velcro solution on the yoke, and I have Jet Shades on the side windows. Since adding the Jet Shades, I don’t think I have ever had an overheating issue.
The one downside to the gold windows is the impact on Starlink reception. I haven’t really followed the Starlink SF50 threads, so maybe somebody has found a solution. Starlink is much cheaper and faster than Gogo. I cancelled my Gogo subscription in my CJ, and now use the less elegant “antenna on the dash” Starlink wifi solution.
Lastly, join COPA. It’s dirt cheap, and the best aviation forum, by far. I am still a member of TBMOPA, and now a member on CJP, yet I spend much more time on this forum. It’s an incredible resource.
