TAMPA – Divers recovered the bodies of a Wilton Manors man and another man from a small airplane that took off from the Pompano Beach Airport Tuesday morning and crashed into Tampa Bay short of a waterfront airfield later in the day, authorities said.

The four-seat Cessna Cardinal 177 went down in the shipping channel near the Peter O. Knight Airport south of downtown at about 11:35 a.m., Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin said.

The pilot was identified as Lawrence Koh, 44, of Wilton Manors. The other occupant, a man in his 20s, was not immediately identified pending notification of his family.

The plane left Pompano Beach at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday bound for Tampa. The pilot radioed the airport to report engine trouble and request an emergency landing as the plane neared the airport on Davis Island, Durkin said.

Witnesses said the aircraft flew low over the bay and turned abruptly before hitting the surface. It settled in 16 feet of water.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
