Thanks James, I switched my schedule around to leave early Friday instead. Better to play it safer that way. Appreciate all the help.
Daniel,
Ive made the detroit phoenix trip several times, March, November, January… in my G5 22na FIKI…via Detroit , ABQ , SJN, KPHX.about 13000 highest for a couple hours south of ABQ. I wont fly the mountains at night and in actual IFR during icing season. When the weather looks to be challenging , I route via Elpaso, Tuson , Phoenix. Takes a bit longer but safer. Phoenix is a great jump off place for california, las vegas, grand canyon and sedona . Caution. ADOT dinged me heavy $$ when exceeded 90 days in same calendar year. I base at KDVT. lots of covered tie downs .
Carry water and warm cloaths. My wife would prefer the Airlines… She doesnt get it You’re welcome to call me.
Carl
Thanks Carl, I appreciate the two flight plans and tips!
There was chatter earlier about airspeeds and power in higher terrain. I won’t comment on that, but will add to the talk about terrain and night flying.
Visibility or not, I recommend referring to the ODP for any airport (particularly non-towered) you’re departing from with nearby terrain. Sometimes you find that with DA especially you don’t have as much power to climb as you’re used to and you’re happy you have some extra room below you because you followed the obstacle departure procedure.
You’re welcome and btw , in that part of the world i carry basic survival gear … plastic tarp, hatchet, lighters etc .
Have fun.
The first time I read this, I thought it said lightsabers etc…
Or you saw this… STARGLOW SABER. RETRACTABLE BLADE! | Indiegogo … which is a lighter/lightsaber in one.
That’s freaky cool.
Good call on following ODP- planning on bringing as much fuel as I can get so I won’t be light.
Also thanks for the reminder of the basic survival kit- we will have a GARMIN inReach but I could have easily overlooked the other stuff. Best to plan for a night somewhere and never need it, than need it and not have it.
That being said a lightsaber could come in handy if one were stranded in the middle of nowhere.
I carry one of these, made in USA and by a great company.
Spruce has them for around $80
What oxygen considerations would you take for a flight like this?
